I’m sure you are familiar with the frustrating feeling when you know someone that just seems to never gain weight. You probably often ask yourself what is it that they do and we don’t? What is the missing link?
Do you know the saying “We first make our habits, and then our habits make us.”? If you are curious about what some of those habits may be, check the article below.
1. Moderation Isn’t Always Key
You have probably heard that if you eat any food in moderation that will prevent gaining weight. Maybe, but how do you define moderation? What is consuming sugar in moderation? The truth is, you have to aim for healthy choices. The “fact” that you eat sweets in moderation is just a construct you built for yourself not to feel bad when you eat sweets.
2. Appreciating the Relapses
There were times when you tried really hard, you’ve been eating healthy and exercising for a couple of months, but then everything caved down at your friend’s birthday party. You stuffed your face with cake and drinks and felt like giving up. Don’t do this. The people that understand weight loss understand that it is in human nature to mess things up sometimes. The key is to not give up. If you messed up one day, it doesn’t mean you are a mess. Tomorrow is a new day.
3. Consuming Water
Almost all the people that never gain weight, have this habit. Consciously or unconsciously they drink plenty of water and that maybe helps them stay full for longer because water is known to have this effect.
4. Consulting Your Doctor
Besides not gaining weight as your ultimate goal, it is also crucial to make sure your overall health is in check. Your weight gain may be connected with different factors such as an under-active thyroid. By talking to your doctor you can check is this the case and stop your weight gain without taxing your overall health.
5. Curbing Impulses
Impulsive behavior is a big one. People that are impulsive shoppers, tend to be impulsive eaters too. Many people are wasting so much time on diets, spending big bucks on nutritionists, while they have a habit of reacting to every impulse in their life. By monitoring impulses in different areas of your life, you can maybe go to the roots of why are you overeating.
6. Regular Exercise
People that are not gaining weight are also pretty active people. It doesn’t mean they go to the gym and work out like pro athletes, but they usually have activities like hiking, walking the dog every day, walking instead of using transport, and so on, and all these small activities add up over time.
7. Cut Out Sugar
Sugars are the biggest factor when it comes to weight gain, as they are very dense in calories. Instead, you can start consuming more fruits because they contain natural sugars.
8. Stop Comparing
Another important habit that fit people have is that they never compare themselves to others. They know that everyone is different, and everyone has different goals and needs. So when you try to lose weight, stop comparing your results with others, and have some self-love. Make sure that you are continuously making small progress, and before you know it, you will be in amazing shape.
9. Understanding Good and Bad Weight
Fit people also don’t take the scale so seriously. Sometimes it may seem like you have gained weight, but maybe the reason is that you gained muscle mass, which is a good thing. Remember that the scale is not the only thing that results are measured with, we have to look for them in the mirror too.
10. Getting Rest
People rarely link the quality of sleep with weight gain. But you will be surprised how important that is, both for mental and physical health. If you are not rested well, you won’t be able to be physically active, and more importantly, you will crave food, especially sugars a lot more.
Losing weight is never an easy quest because it depends on many factors in your life. But be sure of one thing, your habits are the most important factor. Changing a few of them can make a dramatic difference over a period of 1 year.
